In an era of Hong Kong icons, no star shines brighter than Brigitte Lin Ching Hsia. Her talent, her grace, her professionalism, and of course, her beauty, have captivated movie audiences around the world. Finally, there's a book about Brigitte that comes from true admiration. Not quite a biography, the book intends simply to bring the heart and soul of the actress to fans and interested readers everywhere. Through a collection of interviews with the author, we get personal vignettes into Brigitte's life through the eyes of her friends, colleagues and the author herself. Rich in passion, loyalty and true friendship, the Hong Kong/Taiwan cinema elite give the author glimpses into Brigitte's experiences in the entertainment industry, from her earliest days to her last film before she retreated into retirement. And last, we have Brigitte's own interviews with the author. Conducted over the course of years, these touch-points between "idol" and "fan" provide honest commentary from the actress on her work in the industry that spanned 22 years. It truly is a window into her world.---Susanna Modjallal

Author's comment on the book:
It took almost 8 years to publish this book because it is written in English, a foreign language to me, and required endless proofreading. I also discovered that writing a book is one thing, but publishing it is other. I had to find a suitable publisher as well as clear the copyrights for photos and images used in the book. I was exhausted with the whole business process so I put the book aside for a year or so until my enthusiasm returned. I had many dreams about how my book on my idol would turn out. It would be large and hardcover, with all the photos in color and English-Chinese bilingual text. But over the years my dream shrank, mainly for financial reasons. It's now a pocket book soft cover with 25 black/white and 30 color pictures, English text only, and self-published. Although it's a miniature version of my dream, this is how I envisioned the book. Please enjoy it.

Reader's reviews:

I've just finished reading Akiko's new book on Brigitte Lin. It is simply amazing, and I highly recommend it to all fans of HK cinema. By structuring the book as interviews with Brigitte, with her friends and colleagues, and with Brigitte and her friends together, Akiko succeeds in painting a well-rounded and intimate portrait. With her fact-checking skills as a journalist and committed passion as a fan, she has created a truly unique publication. I really felt like I was sitting in the presence of Brigitte when I was reading this book. There are also many wonderful black-and-white and color photographs and movie stills, including candid shots of Brigitte taken during the interviews. (by David Wells)

I haven't actually been able to finish it because I don't want to! Its so enjoyable reading the interviews with Brigitte that I don't want to get to the end - so I read a page or two a day - and have skipped ahead to read the other non-Brigitte interviews. Its just great. (by Brian Naas)

I've only read about 50 pages of The Last Star of the East and like Brian Naas I don't want to finish it. The book contains an amazing amount of information on Brigitte Lin herself plus the people she worked with, the films she starred in, and the film industry in Hong Kong. Akiko Tetsuya has done an amazing job of putting it all together into an informative highly entertaining book. In the last two days I've rewatched Swordsman II, Dream Lovers, parts of Chungking Express, parts of The Dream of the Red Chamber & parts of Peking Opera Blues (only parts as I rewatched them recently). If I continue like this it will take me forever to finish the book... (by Sarah Knight)

I found the book to be a fascinating read! I read the entire book in the course of about 9 hours, haha. When I was reading it, I was so caught up in it, I was so enthralled that I wasn't paying attention to anything else. A friend of a friend asked what I was reading, so I told her it's a book about Brigitte Lin Ching Hsia, a famous Taiwanese actress. She asked, "What movies has she done?" I spouted out some movie titles that your average westerner might be familiar with, "Swordsman II, Police Story, The Bride with White Hair, Dragon Inn." She gave me the most puzzling look and just said, "Oh..." Haha, I hope that doesn't make me sound like some movie snob. Being an American who has a special admiration for Asian cinema (particularly Hong Kong cinema), it's difficult to find others to talk to about it.  While reading the interview segments with Brigitte, I felt like I was actually there. It was thrilling to be able to learn about her films and her personal life from her own lips. I will be no doubt read the book again on numerous occasions both for fun and to consult as I continue my own studies in Asian cinema. I appreciate all the hard work you put into this book. (by Mark Walters)

The Brigitte Lin book is wonderful. Not only does it make us fall in love with Brigitte all over again, it also provides a very valuable portrait of what filmmaking in Taiwan was like during the 1970s and '80s and in Hong Kong in the 1980s and '90s. I even went down to a Chinatown DVD shop that carries VCDs of some of Brigitte's Taiwan films and bought three that didn't have subtitles. The interviews in the book are priceless. I don't know that I've ever read a group of interviews that provides such a marvelous overview of what it was like to make such a body of work. This book is not only a must-have for even casual fans of Brigitte, but for all fans of Hong Kong and Taiwan cinema. It really needs to be promoted in places where it can get to other Asian film fans. And the photos are great. The color section is very impressive. (by Brian Camp)

I really enjoy reading the book.  It is a very excellent book, very detailed. You have put in a lot of patient, countless time, and effort to interview her friends and colleagues. Especially with Mrs. Lin, the interviews were incredible.  Through her words, I could feel her emotion and sorrow in her past when she was working, and also her humor and happiness after she is married. She was showing the very truth of her self. I am very touched. Although you say there are typo and grammatical mistakes, but I have no problem in understanding it at all.  Besides, I think it is unique that you kept the original conversations without correcting a word.  I can read this book over and over again without getting bored.
